The West facing border in the walled garden was inspired by the poem "Pied Beauty" by Gerard Manley Hopkins. The poem, which is very dear to me, celebrates the beauty of the different and the unusual, the grace of dappled, freckled things. I have planted the border with foxgloves, fritillaries, hellebores and the ancient rosa mundi. The acid green of the lichen on the old wall is woven though the planting giving edgy shocks of modern colour to an otherwise wildish scheme.
