The gardens here at Narborough Hall offer pupils fantastic opportunities for learning outside the classroom.

“Every young person should experience the world beyond the classroom as an essential part of learning and personal development, whatever their age, ability or circumstances” (Learning Outside the Classroom Manifesto November 2006).

We believe that the gardens here at Narborough offer a range of learning experiences for pupils that are directly relevant to the National Curriculum and beyond. The restored walled kitchen garden and formal herbaceous borders around the house are a perfect canvas for teaching pupils across a range of national curriculum themes.

Gardening and mathematical and scientific enquiry are surprisingly good partners! The gardens offer inspiration for artistic and creative projects and the surrounding parkland provides an exciting environment for children to explore, play and learn.

Pupils can come and see the wide range of fruit and vegetables grown here and discover how the plants are raised and cared for. The gardens, plants and surrounding parkland offer opportunities to demonstrate mathematical and scientific principles, build pupils’ knowledge of organic gardening and inspire art and literacy projects.

There is so much to see and experience here at Narborough Hall. Children enjoy learning through play and engaging with nature. Through building fairy houses in our woods or bug shelters in the walled garden pupils will learn about natural materials, design techniques and organic gardening and will have so much fun along the way!

We welcome visits from schools wishing to use the estate for teaching and learning. We can assist you in planning self guided programmes of study though a pre-visit assessment session. We can guide you round the estate and discuss how you can plan your visit day. Alternatively, why not book one of our tailored visit programmes? We have prepared resources specific to Narborough Hall Gardens that enable pupils to explore this environment whilst focussing on key elements of the National Curriculum.

New for 2010

We are excited to offer our own educational programme for Foundation Year and Key Stage 1 pupils. We have prepared a range of resources that will guide pupils around the gardens and grounds here at Narborough.

The activity sheets have been designed to address key elements of the Science, Maths and Art curricula and offer pupils opportunities to develop their literacy skills. Other curriculum areas are embedded in the activities too. Elements of the Design and technology, citizenship and geography requirements are also addressed in our activities. The resources have been designed to guide teachers and pupils around the gardens and grounds on a series of trails and quizzes relating to Narborough Hall.

We are also able to offer pupils some hands on activity work in the walled garden or greenhouse. Pupils can come in and learn about growing vegetables from seed and perhaps take home something to grow as a reminder of their time with us at Narborough.

The trails are intended to be fun and educational. Pupils are encouraged to find objects, identify patterns, follow directions, solve problems, use their senses, collect natural materials and explore their local environment.

Along the way pupils will see our amazing willow sculptures, wander through magical fairy woodland, picnic on the lawn and enjoy some time out to play.
